It’s 2019 And We’re Still Here
It’s the start of a new year and all around the world, people are making resolutions to better themselves in the upcoming year. I never do New Year’s Resolutions. I don’t really believe in them, because I feel like I’m reflecting and trying to better myself throughout the year. I don’t think that if I see something to improve on, I should wait a week or a month until the new year to try to do better. I try to work on it now and improve myself.
On New Year’s Eve, my husband and I were watching the CNN coverage of the ball drop because I love Anderson Cooper so I’ve been watching his coverage since I was in high school. They interviewed Dave Chappelle and asked him if he had any resolutions. His response was perfect.
“No, I don’t make false promises to myself.” – Dave Chappelle
This is exactly how I feel about New Year’s Resolutions. I don’t like planning a long list of things to do, because I’m unable to do them all, I feel an immense sense of guilt and sadness. I like to constantly improve myself and work to myself daily. I don’t want to make a grand plan at the beginning of the year.
What I’ve been working on is posting more and utilizing twitter more. I really want to be able to make writing my career, as well as my business of selling personalized merchandise. It’s not an easy goal by any means. But it’s what I’ve been working towards the past year and a half, and I want to work harder and progress even more.
I understand why some people feel the need to make these resolutions. It feels really good to set a goal and work towards it. Everyone likes a fresh start and the ability to sort of have a fresh start and put the bad things behind and work towards the positive in the next year.
Instead of making resolutions one time a year, I challenge you to constantly reassess yourself throughout the year and make improvements as much as you can. However, the thing I enjoy doing is making a conscious choice to surround myself with positivity. I enjoy reflecting on the people in my life that have made it more difficult, rather than a joyful existence. In 2019, let’s just work to better ourselves and our situations throughout the year, and make it the best year yet!
